The problem of the subsonic flow through a pipe of a general section has been treated by the method of series development in ascending even power of Mach number. Zero approximation is Hagen-Poiseuille motion. The solution of the equation for the first and second approximations are all reduced to the problem of Dirichlet and the bi-harmonic problem with specified boundary conditions. The method has been applied to the case of a pipe of circular section for which explicit solutions have been obtained.
The paper was written while the author held a Sino-British Indemnity Fund Scholarship in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Toronto.
